Challenges of IP software selection and implementation - a customer view
Chris Vigars, Founder, ElementOne IP

Abstract

The speaker will present a customer view of selection and implementation of an IP management software solution in both large and small IP private practice firms. The speaker will consider various issues that are encountered during such a process, and will compare and contrast the effects on large and small firms. These issues include:

  • Evaluating the business case;
  • Selection procedure;
  • Cost vs. value;
  • Infrastructure issues;
  • Development issues;
  • Legacy systems;
  • Integration with other software solutions and existing working practices;
  • Personnel issues including change management and training;
  • Business cultural issues.

The comparison of the issues arising in large and small firms will be of broad interest to the attendees of the conference, and should provoke some debate and knowledge sharing.

Speaker Biography

Chris is a European Patent Attorney and UK Chartered Patent Attorney. He joined the profession in 1993, following completion of an Engineering Honours Degree at the University of Oxford. Chris qualified in 1997, and became a Partner at Haseltine Lake in 2000. In 2008, he founded a new IP practice, ElementOne IP.

During his time at Haseltine Lake, he was the partner with responsibility for IT, and as part of that role managed a move away from a legacy system to implementation of the Patricia IP management solution from Patrix AB of Gothenburg, Sweden. The implementation involved full customisation of the software package, conversion of legacy data, integration with other software packages, and extensive training issues.
